The Mayors Adapt initiative was launched by the European Commission, building on the success of the Covenant of Mayors in climate change mitigation and aiming to meet the goals of the European adaptation strategy. This pan-European initiative supports cities in their climate adaptation activities, fosters knowledge-exchange between cities and offers cities a platform to present their activities.
Signatory cities of the Covenant of Mayors develop climate adaptation plans, or integrate these into existing policies and plans. The Mayors Adapt initiative supports their work with technical expertise and targeted tools, and progress is measured every two years. Communication on their engagement is also a key area of support from the initiative, where cities receive the opportunity to exchange ideas and network among each other, and are provided with a platform to present and gain media attention on their activities.
IFOK oversaw all communications activities of this pan-European project from early 2014 to the end of 2016. This include both the centralised communications and public relations activities (e.g. website development, EU-level public relations, social media communications), as well as support of cities in their decentralised communications work (development of guidebooks, provision of written materials, communications coaching, inquiry management, etc.).
IFOK also managed all events within the project, from event design to implementation and moderation. This included workshops with city represents from across Europe on the further development of the Mayors Adapt initiative to meet city needs; a high-level opening event in Brussels with EU Commissioner Connie Hedegaard, multiple mayors, stakeholders and the press as well as three pan-European conferences of signatory cities and mayors together with high-level representatives of European institutions.
