Uli Hellweg was born in Dortmund in 1948. He completed his architecture and urban plannning studies at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule – RWTH Aachen in 1976.
After working as a research associate at the German Institute of Urban Affairs (DIFU) in Berlin and as head of department in the urban planning office of the city of Gelsenkirchen, he coordinated pilot projects at the Internationale Bauausstellung Berlin GmbH – IBA ’84/’87 from 1980 to 1987. From 1987 to 1992 he was responsible for the urban renewal activities of the IBA successor company, S.T.E.R.N. GmbH, in Berlin’s Moabit district. From 1992 to 1996 Hellweg was head of the Planning and Building Department of the City of Kassel. After his work as a municipal building surveyor, he held several management positions, including at Wasserstadt GmbH (Berlin), DSK (Wiesbaden) and agora s.a.r.l. (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). From September 2006 to March 2015 Hellweg was Managing Director of Internationale Bauausstellung Hamburg GmbH. For his achievements Hellweg was awarded the Semper Medal of the Hamburg Architecture Centre of the Association of German Architects.
Since 2015, he has been managing Hellweg Urban Concept GbR, based in Berlin (www.stadtbauen.de) and since 2016 he has been a member of the ISD Lichtenstein Institute for Strategic Development.
Hellweg has delivered numerous lectures and publications at home and abroad. Hellweg is a member of the Berlin Chamber of Architects, the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning, the German Werkbund and the Zurich Architecture Forum.
